The Huawei Student Developers (HSD) program is expanding to the UK following its success in China.
HSD initially launched in China in 2019. The program is designed to help students on their respective journeys to becoming tomorrow’s tech pioneers.
Over the weekend, Huawei held an event in London with around 100 attendees to mark the expansion of HSD to the UK. The event featured a keynote speech, panel discussion, a “TechTalk”, and offered advice to students on how to take the next steps in their careers.
HSD provides a peer-to-peer learning environment and combines online and physical events for students to learn, network, exchange ideas, and collaborate on projects.
Members will learn a variety of skills across Huawei’s vast ecosystem that covers its HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) Core open capabilities, flexible operating system HarmonyOS, cutting-edge topics like AI, and more.
Aside from directly opening up new opportunities, joining HSD also provides a valuable addition to a developer’s CV to help them stand out from others early in their careers.
Across Europe, Huawei has a three-year vision to deliver €1M in innovation incentives, run more than 100 codelabs for student developers, and cooperate with over 100 universities.
In the UK, Huawei has already forged a relationship with 11 leading universities:

Student developers of any skill level are welcome to join the HSD community.
Student Ambassadors
Student developers wishing to take even greater advantage of the HSD program can join as ambassadors.
HSD ambassadors are enthusiastic leaders within the community and will assist with organising and hosting events, workshops, and other activities. They will also help with promoting and growing the HSD community.
In return, HSD ambassadors will gain leadership skills in addition to tapping a global network of talent, benefit from mentorship opportunities, have the potential to attend global events, and connect with Huawei experts that are some of the most esteemed in their respective fields.
The ambassador initiative provides a further boost to a developer’s CV with an exclusive certificate that shows any prospective employer that the candidate has shown drive and leadership qualities, as well as having skills and experience working on behalf of a global tech leader.
While anyone can join the general HSD program, there are the following requirements for becoming an ambassador:
- Be an undergraduate or postgraduate student at a college or university, with at least one year remaining.
- Experience with event planning or leading a team.
- Have people skills and an interest in social activities.
- Great organisational skills and the ability to plan and organise activities.
- Availability to commit to the program for at least one year.
Huawei says that upon receiving a HSD ambassador application it will begin its review process. If the application meets its criteria, it will contact the applicant within one week to conduct an interview. Following the interview, a final decision will be made within three days.
