Portugália Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of TAP Air Portugal, has partnered with The Gang, a developer studio specialising in creating bespoke digital experiences, to launch the first immersive e-learning hub on Microsoft Mesh, a cloud-based platform for collaboration in the digital world.

The new education hub is designed to enhance and streamline Portugália Airlines’ existing training programme by providing an immersive learning environment. This will enable pilots and cabin crew, regardless of their location, to participate in training sessions and meetings as if they were physically together in one digital space.

The e-learning hub is designed to embody the airline’s brand identity, fostering a strong sense of togetherness among staff. It features a dynamic virtual workspace comprising a variety of classrooms for focused training sessions and one-to-one discussions, as well as a conference room for larger team meetings.

The partnership was formed because of The Gang’s expertise in building high-tech, immersive experiences and extensive knowledge of host platforms. A critical aspect for Portugália Airlines was the ability to integrate live streaming within the training centre, with The Gang recommending Microsoft Mesh as the ideal hosting platform for this. This solution dovetails seamlessly with the airline’s existing IT infrastructure, offering staff the convenience of joining virtual meetings through Microsoft Teams.

Hugo Oliveira, Portugália Airlines training director, said: “Portugália Airlines is revered for our extensive training. As a forward-thinking airline, we are always looking for opportunities to utilise technology to enhance our employees’ and customers’ experience. With our workforce scattered across many different locations, creating consistency in our company culture and training can be challenging. By bringing our workforce together virtually, our team can collaborate and immerse themselves in the sessions as if they were face-to-face. The interactive environment also limits external distractions while our team undergo training, crucial to helping us maintain our excellent standards.”

Samuel Arvidsson, chief commercial officer at The Gang, added: “We thrive in pushing the boundaries of immersive technology and are thrilled to launch our very first solution on Microsoft Mesh. Utilising its pioneering digital capabilities, we have created a compelling immersive education environment, tailored to address Portugália Airlines’ need for a dynamic workspace that enriches its workforce’s training experience. This is truly a first-class e-learning solution which sets the benchmark for future virtual education platforms, and we are excited to see how this lands with the Portugália Airlines team.”
